More than 950 cities in the U.S. have streets named after MLK. We are one of them.
There is nothing ordinary about the street names in Macon.
Our downtown streets running east to west are named for trees – Walnut, Mulberry, Poplar, Pine, Plum, Pine, Hemlock, Maple, Elm and Hazel. Of course, the famous Cotton Avenue cuts a diagonal path through the heart of the city. Macon residents are forever amused when they point out that our large regional hospital, Atrium Health (Medical Central of Central Georgia) is located on Hemlock Street.
