“Try to love on your wife
And stay close to your friends
Toast each sundown with wine
Don't let the old man in”
— Toby Keith
I had a birthday earlier this week, a celebration of another trip around the sun briefly interrupted by a solar eclipse.
But at least it was my birthday and not a teacher at our school who recently turned 80. The day the math teacher became an octogenarian, a student came up to me in the hallway and wished me a happy birthday.
“Wait a minute,’’ I said. “Do you think I’m … ???’’
I used to think 80 was ancient. Now it’s 65 with 15 years of experience. Another ring around the tree.
Still, old age ain’t for Grissies.
