Thursday was National Columnists Day. There were no parades. The mail was still delivered, although not as promptly and efficiently.
Columnists Day might have slipped your mind, what with it also being National High Five Day. Don’t worry about getting me a card, belated or otherwise. Just give me a hug if you see me.
I still write a column for a weekly newspaper, The Monroe County Reporter. I don’t have as much of a presence as I did in the old days when I wrote four columns a week in The Macon Telegraph.
But I’m still out there. Telling stories. Do what you love. Love what you do.
The day set aside for newspaper columnists is not self-serving. The National Society of Newspaper Columnists simply urges those in the profession to "write a column about how great it is to be a columnist.''
It’s the greatest job in the world to have a voice and a platform to tell stories. Sadly, there aren’t many true-blooded columnists left. Bloggers don’t count. A keyboard, a website and a loud mouth are not credentials.
